A couple of quick questions...

We'll be visiting Montreal during the first week of August. Can you tell us whether the ride along the bike path which runs next to the river, or the bike path which runs next to the canal, would be a more enjoyable afternoon pedal to the Parc René Lévesque and the tip of the peninsula?

Also...

Can you recommend a good bike shop to rent a couple of bikes for a day, and one which is as close as possible to either of the above mentioned bike paths?

We are new recreational cyclists, so we are looking for a relaxed cycling experience, on comfortable bikes. Our own bikes are a pair of Cannondale F5 mountain bikes, so something similar would suit us well.

Personally, If I was just cruising, I prefer the bike path along the river. There is more to see and its not arrow straight. The path along the canal is nice also, but it's flat and runs parallel to a highway for a while. It is slightly shorter than riding along the side of the water.

I have never actually rented a bike, therefore im not too sure about the best bike shop to rent bikes. I do know that there is a bike shop on the Canal path opposite Atwater market. No idea whether it's good value for money...

hello!

there's a bike shop in the old port called "ca roule", and they rent a variety of bikes from city cruisers to more sophisticated hybrids, they even supply helmets and water! from there you can access the lachine canal bike path, which is a pretty nice i'd say. i don't know where the bike path along the river is...?

anyways, that's my two cents. i recently rented bike from that shop with a bunch of kids with my day camp, and the service was good and the prices were decent. also, the old port is also a fantastic spot to just wander and walk around after your ride.

Victoria,
I believe the bike path along the river he mentioned is the one that starts from wHere you cross the champlain bridge to go to the Estacade, but instead you go right and you go along Lachine. You end up at the end of the Lachine canal.

The folks at My Bicyclette have recommended a loop which includes a bit of both routes, so hopefully that's where we'll ride.

Anyone been to the La Strada restaurant? That's where we were thinking of stopping for lunch, during our little daytrip...
